Steve Agular is Managing Director of Zaffre Investments (Zaffre), Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts’ strategic investing arm. He leads day-to-day operations of Zaffre, including investment execution and portfolio company management. Steve sits on the boards of a number of Zaffre companies (Arcadia Healthcare, Cohero Health, iQuartic, Zipongo, InfoBionic and QCentive) and is a member of the LP Advisory Committees of Long River Ventures and Health Enterprise Partners. Prior to joining Zaffre, Steve operated his own consultancy, providing management and advisory services to healthcare companies in a number of areas, including: strategy development and implementation; business and corporate development; marketing; and finance. He was also a Venture Partner of Mansa Capital, a private equity firm specializing in high growth companies in the healthcare services and healthcare technology sectors.
Previously, he co-founded and served as President of Soltazza, a company that manufactured and distributed an all-in-one (espresso, coffee, and tea), environmentally-friendly brewer. Steve was responsible for all day-to-day operations of the company, including the development of the Soltazza brand.
Prior to that, he directed strategic planning and M&A for Schaller Anderson (purchased by Aetna), a private equity-backed provider of outsourced services to healthcare plans throughout the U.S. In this role, Steve originated, structured, and negotiated potential mergers, acquisitions, and other strategic partnerships; as well as led all company-wide strategic planning efforts.
Earlier in his career, Steve was a member of SG Cowen’s Investment Banking groups in New York and San Francisco. While at SG Cowen, he helped start the firm’s West Coast Leveraged Finance practice, and worked with technology and healthcare companies to raise approximately $8 billion from debt and equity offerings.
Steve received his M.B.A. from The UCLA Anderson School of Management and an A.B. in Environmental Science and Public Policy with Honors from Harvard College. Steve is a guest lecturer on Corporate Venture Capital at the MIT Sloan School of Management and Princeton University.
